The project
SPACE-INNOVATE@UNIVERSEH will strengthen innovation and entrepreneurial capacity in higher education institutions (HEIs) operating at the forefront of Europe’s emerging space economy. Its vision is to position the UNIVERSEH Alliance as Europe’s leading academic ecosystem for space innovation and entrepreneurship, empowering students, researchers and innovators to develop world-class space-enabled solutions addressing major societal challenges including climate change, sustainable food systems and digital transformation. This vision will be realised by promoting systemic institutional change within participating universities and by strengthening their integration into European innovation ecosystems through the EIT knowledge triangle model connecting education, research and business collaboration.
Six universities engaged in the project (Poland, France, Luxembourg, Sweden and Italy), together with ecosystem partners, will jointly implement eight EIT HEI Initiative actions aimed at transforming institutional innovation capacity. Project implementation will be organised through six interconnected work packages addressing institutional engagement, skills development, ecosystem partnerships, innovation support mechanisms, KIC synergies and project coordination. These activities will modernise institutional environments, strengthen technology transfer and entrepreneurship support structures, and create interdisciplinary learning pathways connecting space science, engineering, business and innovation.
The project will deliver measurable impact aligned with EIT HEI key performance indicators:

- train more than 6,500 students, researchers and staff in innovation and entrepreneurship competences through interdisciplinary programmes, mentoring schemes and innovation challenges;
- support 30 startups emerging from space-related research and education activities;
- establish or improve more than 12 institutional innovation mechanisms and partnerships strengthening collaboration between universities, research organisations, industry and innovation ecosystems;
- create structured pipelines linking university-based innovation teams with EIT programmes, accelerators and investment instruments.
By strengthening the integration of the knowledge triangle and embedding entrepreneurship within the space education ecosystem, SPACE-INNOVATE@UNIVERSEH will position the UNIVERSEH Alliance as a European reference hub for space innovation and entrepreneurship. The project will contribute directly to Europe’s competitiveness in the global space economy while enabling universities to play a central role in developing high-impact space-enabled technologies, startups and innovation ecosystems for the benefit of society.
Our vision
Through the Innovation Vision Action Plan (IVAP), the alliance will move beyond project based cooperation and establish a permanent collaboration architecture that aligns institutional missions, operational resources and thematic priorities with the selected EIT KICs. In line with Topic 2 of the EIT HEI Call 2025, the project focuses on structured and sustainable alliance KIC cooperation that enhances institutional innovation capacity and generates systemic impact across regions and sectors. By the end of the funding period and beyond, UNIVERSEH will operate with permanent innovation governance mechanisms, harmonised alliance level startup support structures, embedded interdisciplinary entrepreneurship curricula and structured referral pathways into EIT KIC acceleration and education instruments.
Methodology
The methodology of the Innovation Vision Action Plan follows a clear transformation pathway: from HEInnovate diagnostic to systemic institutional reform. As illustrated in the “Methodology at a Glance” model below, the project begins with evidence, translates that evidence into defined structural weaknesses, and converts those weaknesses into coordinated institutional transformation measures. The HEInnovate self-assessment across six institutions and eight entrepreneurial domains provided a comparable and alliance wide diagnostic baseline. The results did not point to isolated gaps, but to structural patterns: governance responsibilities for innovation were fragmented; staff incentive systems were weak; entrepreneurial competences were insufficiently embedded in curricula; startup support mechanisms operated in parallel rather than in an interoperable way; and impact monitoring lacked coherence and strategic alignment.
The identified weaknesses are interconnected. Fragmented governance prevents ownership. Weak incentives limit staff engagement. Disjointed curricula isolate entrepreneurship from STEM learning. Inefficient startup support reduces efficiency and cross-border cooperation. Limited monitoring weakens accountability and long-term improvement. Addressing one dimension in isolation would therefore not generate sustainable change.
The methodological response is systemic. The project defines targeted domain focus areas and translates them into four institutional transformation pillars: Embedded Governance, Interdisciplinary Curricula, Startup Support Structures, and Structured EIT KIC Cooperation. Governance reform ensures leadership anchoring and strategic ownership. Curriculum integration embeds innovation competences within accredited interdisciplinary programmes rather than extracurricular initiatives. Harmonised research to market pathways create interoperable startup validation and mentoring structures. Structured KIC alignment formalises long-term ecosystem integration beyond ad hoc cooperation.
These pillars are implemented through an integrated Work Plan ensuring that governance reform, educational embedding, partnership architecture, startup pipeline harmonisation and monitoring mechanisms evolve in parallel. The methodology therefore moves deliberately from diagnostic insight to institutional redesign.
